The tray and the ceremony

At an Indian wedding the ring is never simply handed over. It travels — carried out to the mandap, held up, passed between two families, and photographed a hundred times on the way. This 10-inch tray is made for that short journey, and for the varmala garlands that follow it. The rectangular form has gently canted sides, so a ring box or a coiled garland sits without sliding off, and a slim carved bead moulding runs the whole outer edge to give the hand something to hold on to. It is deliberately shallow and flat-faced, because the inlay is meant to be read from above by a room full of people standing over it. Between ceremonies it goes back to being a console or dressing-table tray, which is why families keep it long after the wedding week is over.

Parchin kari, inlaid flush into the marble

The floral panel is parchin kari — the Agra–Jaipur stone-inlay tradition carried down from Mughal-era workshops, in which semi-precious stone is cut to shape and set into a chiselled recess in the marble rather than painted on top of it. Every carnelian petal, lapis bud and sliver of mother-of-pearl on this tray is cut by hand, offered up to its own pocket, adjusted, and bedded down until the surface is flush enough that a fingertip cannot find the joint. The vine layout is dense and entirely floral and geometric: no figures, no deities, nothing that would make the piece awkward as a gift between families who keep different traditions at home. Count the flowers across a 10-inch face and you are looking at several hundred individually cut pieces of stone, which is where the working time on a tray like this actually goes.

Makrana marble, and how this one is finished

The body is Makrana white marble from Nagaur district in Rajasthan — the stone the Taj Mahal was built from, and still the benchmark for Indian white marble. It matters here for a practical reason as much as a decorative one: Makrana is dense and close-grained, so an inlay pocket can be chiselled with a sharp shoulder and the setting stays tight instead of crumbling at the rim. The surface is taken to a soft satin polish, a quiet glow rather than a mirror, which keeps the white reading as stone and lets the carnelian and lapis carry the colour. Marble is porous, so wipe spills rather than letting them stand, and keep the tray clear of lemon, vinegar and perfume. A soft dry cloth is all the routine care it needs.

Gifting it, and making it yours

The tray is finished as a presented object rather than a loose one. It seats in a rigid covered gift box on a die-cut recess with the lid propped back, so it can be handed over exactly as it arrives. Wedding planners ordering for a ring ceremony usually take a single boxed tray; families gifting outward take several. The size, the border profile and the inlay palette can all be set at order time, and a name or a wedding date can be worked into the border for a fixed gift.
