Makrana White Marble Sai Baba Beneath the Neem Canopy, 30 in

Makrana marble comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, from quarries worked for close to a thousand years and best known for supplying the stone of the Taj Mahal. It is dense, fine-grained calcite — a bright natural white with the faintest warm undertone, and grey hairline veining so restrained it reads as texture rather than pattern. On a 30-inch Sai Baba that restraint earns its keep: nothing in the stone competes with the face, and a satin polish holds an even glow instead of a hard shine. The canopy overhead is the whole idea of the piece. At Gurusthan in Shirdi stands the neem under which Baba was first seen as a boy, and here that tree is carved into the murti itself — a neem-leaf prabhavali rising from the seat, arching behind and above him, cut from the same block so that nothing ever rests on the figure. Every leaf is undercut and shadowed by hand, and the aureole is worked as openwork, so light passes through the foliage and falls back across his shoulders. The block is roughed out, the seated mass is found, and then the robe folds, the head cloth and the face are taken all the way to finish by hand; no machine touches those surfaces. Baba sits with his right leg crossed over the left knee, right hand raised in blessing, left hand resting easy on the knee — the darshan posture familiar from the Samadhi Mandir. He wears the full-sleeved ankle-length kafni, head cloth wrapped and knotted over the left shoulder, beard kept short, gaze open and level with the devotee. He is a saint in his robe, never an anonymous ascetic figure. At 30 inches this is a piece for a built home shrine or a dedicated altar table rather than a shelf: allow around 17 inches of width for the canopy, and a plinth that brings the face close to seated eye level. Diffused side light suits the openwork best — a single lamp to one side throws the leaf shadows onto the back wall. Keep the diya and flowers at the base, in front of him.
