This is the gift-giving Budai: seated, smiling, with a shallow bowl of carved fruit resting in his lap and offered slightly forward. In Chinese tradition the bowl and the sack are what mark him out — a wandering monk who carried what he was given and gave it away again — and the abundance the form stands for is why it so often goes near an entrance or a place where guests are received.

It is carved in Vietnam white marble, milky white and fine-crystalline, with soft low-contrast grey veining and a little translucency where the stone thins. The finish runs from natural matte to a soft polish, with the tool marks left in place; the fruit in the bowl is where the carving is most detailed, and a matte surface keeps those small forms distinct instead of merging them under a shine.

An 18-inch Buddha on a ledge, and commissioning yours

At 18 inches this is a tabletop or ledge piece. It suits a veranda corner, a patio table, a planter ledge, or a garden alcove beside a path — and it takes sheltered outdoor placement comfortably, which is the usual reason this size is chosen over a purely indoor material.
