Padmasana: a Buddha in snow-white Vietnam marble

Padmasana — the full lotus, both feet drawn up onto the opposite thighs, hands settled in the lap — is the meditation posture most people picture when they picture a Buddha. What distinguishes this carving is the base: the lotus seat is not a separate tier under the figure but flows directly into the robe folds, so the seat and the seated form read as one continuous piece of stone.

It is carved in Vietnam white marble in its snow-white tone, a cool, bright, fine-crystalline stone. The coolness is a practical choice for a garden as much as an aesthetic one — warm-toned whites can turn yellowish under strong sun, while this holds a neutral white through the day. The surface is left matte with the natural grain visible so the chisel work and the crisp edges of the lotus petals stay legible.
