The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried around Thanh Hoa province and has been a steady export stone since the early 2000s. It reads as a clean, cool white — closer to porcelain than to the warm cream of Makrana — with a fine crystalline grain and only hairline traces of grey veining. On a murti this small, that matters more than it would on a four-foot figure. At six inches every feature sits within a few centimetres of the next, so a coarse or heavily veined stone would swallow the anklets, the beaded necklaces and the peacock feather before they ever read. The satin polish follows the same logic: a mirror finish throws hard highlights that flatten small carving, while satin lets light settle on the surface and keeps the chisel work legible from the two or three feet you actually stand at.

The form

Laddu Gopal is Krishna as an infant — the bal roop kept at home across the Braj country around Mathura and Vrindavan, and in Vaishnava households well beyond it. This murti carries the markers that identify the form: a raised hand cupping a ball of butter, a small matki resting at his side, a peacock feather set into the crown, ornaments at the neck, arms and ankles, and a light dhoti at the waist. The proportions are an infant's — large head, short rounded limbs, a low centre of gravity — rather than a scaled-down adult, and that is what separates a true bal Gopal from a miniature Krishna. There is no flute. The flute belongs to Murlidhar and to the Radha-Krishna pairs of a grown Krishna; putting it in an infant's hand mixes two different moments of the same story.

Sizing it for a compact pooja shelf

At six inches tall, about three inches across and roughly a kilogram, this is the smallest Laddu Gopal carved in the range. It is scaled for the situation most apartment households actually have: one shelf, a wall-mounted mandir, or the top tier of a wooden temple where the murti shares space with a thali, a diya and a water pot. A taller figure in that spot crowds everything around it and usually ends up pushed to the back. Six inches also travels — it goes into a bag for a move between cities, or to a relative's home for Janmashtami, with no crate and no freight. The stone is the first decision: this one is Vietnam white marble, and the same form is carved in Makrana white marble, black stone, Dholpur pink sandstone, or cast marble dust, which brings the cost down. After that come the finish — the soft satin used on this piece, or a brighter mirror polish — the depth of the ornament work, and an engraved line on the underside of the plinth when the murti is going out as a wedding or griha pravesh gift.
