About This Piece
Ganesha with the chakra and shankh
This Ganesha sits on a carved throne with his left leg folded across the seat and his right foot on a small footstool. In his upper right hand he holds the chakra, the discus, and in his upper left the shankh, the conch. These two emblems are more often seen with Vishnu, and they give this murti a slightly more formal, temple-like air than the usual axe and noose.
The lower right hand is raised in abhaya with a red Om on the palm. The lower left hand holds a bowl of sweets, and the trunk sweeps across the body to reach into it. Below the throne, his mouse lies stretched out beside the footstool with a sweet of its own.
Carving and colour
The statue is carved from Vietnam white marble and polished to a soft shine. Colour is kept light: a red and gold tilak, painted eyes, a fine line down the trunk and a touch of gold at the top of the tall crown. The rest is bare stone, so the eye goes to the carving: the layered crown, the round halo behind it, the folds of the dhoti falling over the throne, and the carved scrolls on its legs.
The figure, the throne and the rectangular base are one composition, finished with a carved border around the plinth.
Size, and where it suits
The statue is 30 inches tall. That is a generous size for a family mandir, a small temple, or a reception area where a Ganesha is placed to welcome people in. It is a heavy piece and wants a firm, level surface. Exact width, depth and weight are confirmed before dispatch.
About the picture on this page
