The three pieces

A soap dish, a tumbler and a toothbrush stand, worked as one set so the three read as a single object on the counter rather than three separate purchases. Each piece carries the same two-band scheme: a row of upright lotus petals around the shoulder, and below it a pierced jali lattice — the interlocking net that runs through Rajasthani screen carving from the Amber Fort jharokhas onward. The soap dish is the low, open one, wide enough for a full bar with room to drain. The tumbler takes a razor or a pair of brushes. The toothbrush stand is drilled with three separate wells so brushes stand apart instead of leaning into each other. At six inches tall the trio takes up roughly a foot of counter in a row, which fits a standard vanity ledge without crowding a basin.

The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried on Vietnam's central coast near Da Nang and has been a steady export stone since the early 2000s. It reads cooler and cleaner than Makrana — a neutral porcelain white rather than a cream — with a fine crystalline grain and hairline grey veining that stays under a few percent of the surface. That evenness is what makes it work at small scale: on a six-inch piece a heavy vein would cut straight across a lotus petal and break the rhythm of the band. The satin polish is a deliberate choice over a mirror finish. Mirror-polished marble in a bathroom shows every water spot and fingerprint under overhead light; a satin surface diffuses both, and it gives wet hands something to grip.

The jali work

The lattice is what makes this set slower to produce than plain turned marble. Every opening in the band is drilled and then opened out with fine chisels and rifflers, worked from both faces so the cut edges stay square rather than tapering, and the band is finished entirely by hand — a lattice cannot be sanded flat by machine without rounding off the very edges that give it its shadow line. The sculptors we work with in and around Jaipur cut the three pieces side by side as a set, so the petal count and the lattice pitch match across all three. That matching is the first thing the eye catches on a vanity, and it is exactly what gets lost when pieces are made one at a time.

Caring for marble in a bathroom

Marble is calcite, so what damages it here is acidic rather than abrasive: lime descalers, vinegar sprays, some toilet cleaners, and citrus hand soaps left sitting on the dish. None of these hurt the stone in passing contact — the risk is a puddle left overnight. Wipe the pieces with a damp cloth and dry them, tip standing water out of the soap dish, and keep bathroom cleaner off them when you wipe the vanity around them. An annual pass with a stone sealer is optional and mostly cosmetic on a satin finish. The pierced band drains and dries on its own, which is part of the reason the lattice sits where it does rather than at the base.
