Kuan Yin with the willow and the vase

This is the form of Kuan Yin most people picture first. She stands upright on an open lotus, wrapped in long Chinese robes, with a veil drawn over her head and falling to her shoulders. A small seated Amitabha Buddha sits at the front of her crown, the sign that she is the bodhisattva of his family. Her face is calm and slightly lowered, the expression of someone listening.

In her raised right hand she holds a slender willow branch, and in her left, at the waist, a small vase of pure water. The two belong together: the vase holds the water of compassion and the willow is used to sprinkle it, so the pair stands for relief given freely to anyone who asks. Strings of beads hang over the robe, and the hem breaks over bare feet resting on the lotus.

The design is for Vietnam white marble, a dense, fine-grained stone that reads cooler and whiter than most Indian white marble, with only faint hairline veining. A soft satin polish suits this subject well. It lets light move across the long folds of the robe and the veil without the glare of a mirror finish, and it keeps the face gentle.
