Handcrafted Vietnam White Marble Standing Durga Statue with Trishul, 2.5ft

Cool, even and almost porcelain-white, Vietnam white marble is the stone chosen for this 30-inch standing Durga. It is quarried in Thanh Hoa province in northern Vietnam and has been a mainstay of the export stone trade since the early 2000s, valued for a fine crystalline grain that stays consistent through a tall block. That consistency matters on a murti like this one: the goddess, her weapons and the lion beside her are cut from a single piece, so the tone never shifts between her sari and the lion's mane. Faint grey hairline veining runs through the stone and reads as depth rather than pattern. TMW works with independent master sculptors in Jaipur, and every piece is cut to order rather than pulled off a shelf. The block is roughed out first, then the silhouette is established — the vertical line of the trishul, the drop of the sari, the crouch of the lion. Detail carving follows: the tiers of the crown, the strands of the beaded haar, the individual locks of the mane. The face, every hand and the folds of the drapery are finished entirely by hand, with no machine tooling at any stage, and the surface is then brought up through progressive grits to a satin polish that holds light without glare. The iconography follows the Devi Mahatmya account, in which each god arms the goddess before her battle with Mahishasura — the trishul from Shiva, the chakra from Vishnu, the conch from Varuna, the sword from Kala. Here she holds the trident raised in her right hand like a standard, while her front left hand is open in abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness. She stands in samabhanga, weight even on both feet: the upright, formal posture used for murtis meant to be worshipped daily, rather than the dynamic Mahishasura-mardini form. Her lion sits alert at her side instead of mid-leap, which keeps the whole composition still. At 30 inches the murti suits a dedicated pooja room or a built-in apartment mandir, where it reads as the central figure without crowding the niche. Set it on a pedestal or mandir shelf so the goddess's face falls near eye level for someone standing before it, and allow roughly 17 inches of shelf width for the lotus base and the lion. The cool white tone sits easily against cream walls, sandstone and pale wood, and takes warm lamp light in the evening without turning yellow.
