About This Piece

The stone and the brass line

Black granite is the densest stone TMW works in — a fine-crystalline igneous stone from the quarries of south India, jet-black through the body rather than surface-treated, with no veining to break up a flat border and almost no porosity. That last part is what makes it right for a frame. A frame gets handled: picked up, wiped, moved from a console to a shelf and back. A non-porous stone takes that without staining, where a softer white marble slowly records every fingerprint. Polished to a mirror, each border holds one long clean reflection, so the two frames read as a matched set from across a room. The brass is set the way inlay has always been set in Rajasthan — a fine groove is chased into the polished face, drawn brass wire is laid into it, and the surface is then ground back and re-polished until the metal sits dead flush. Run a finger across the border and you feel one continuous surface, not a line stuck on top.

What the pair is, measured

Each frame stands nine inches tall and about six across, upright on two slim feet cut from the same block rather than glued on afterwards. The aperture takes a standard 4 x 6 inch print, recessed behind the face so the photograph and its backing sit inside the stone instead of standing proud of it. The border is left wide and plain on purpose: the brass line is the only ornament, and there is no figure, deity or motif anywhere on either piece. Together the two frames come to roughly two kilos, heavy enough that neither one shifts when a door slams and light enough to carry to a wedding. They travel in a rigid presentation box with a lid that stands upright behind them, so the box is part of the gift rather than something the couple unwraps and throws away.

Why a frame works as a wedding gift

Most wedding gifts are decided in the week before the wedding and judged five years later. A frame survives that gap better than almost anything else on a gift table, because the couple decides what goes inside it — and a pair gives them two decisions rather than one. The usual split is the wedding photograph in one and a family group in the other, or one frame turned over to each set of parents; the 4 x 6 aperture is the size every photo lab prints as standard, so nothing has to be re-cropped or specially ordered. Black stone also behaves well against colour: a heavily embroidered lehenga or a bright mandap shot reads cleanly inside a black border, where a white marble frame competes with it. On a bedside pair, a console table or the shelf beside a home mandir, the set stays quiet.

Changing it before it is made

Every piece here is made to order, so this frame is a starting point rather than a fixed item. The aperture can be cut for a 5 x 7 or a square print instead, the brass line doubled into a border-within-a-border, a date or two names engraved along the lower edge, or the whole pair made in Makrana white marble if a lighter set suits the couple's home better. Single frames, sets of four for a family, and a matching stone tray sized to the same box are all straightforward. Tell us the print size and the sentiment, and we will design it with you, brief the sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and follow it through to the couple's door. If the wedding is close, ask first — a pair may already be carved, in which case there is no carving wait and we send you photographs of the actual pieces; a fresh commission runs four to eight weeks.
