The stone

Dholpur sandstone comes out of the quarries around Dholpur, in eastern Rajasthan on the Chambal — the belt that supplied stone for a long run of Mughal and Rajput building, and more recently for Akshardham in Delhi. Most of what leaves those quarries is the deep red grade. This jhula is cut from the pale pink grade instead: a warm blush tone with a fine, even quartz grain, faint sedimentary banding, and the occasional iron-oxide freckle that tells you the block was cut rather than cast. Worked to a honed matte surface, the stone keeps that soft warm reading under lamplight rather than throwing back a hard shine, which is why it sits comfortably beside brass and cotton in a mandir.

Why the seat is empty

A jhula is furniture, not a murti. This one is carved and sold on its own, so the seat is a bare platform with nothing on it — the space is left for the Laddu Gopal your family already keeps. The seat is sized for a murti in the 5 to 7 inch range, which covers most household Kanha figures, and it hangs level on four chains so a small dressed murti sits square rather than tipping forward. Many jhulas are sold with a child Krishna carved into the seat, which locks the piece to one deity and one size. Leaving it vacant does the opposite: the swing serves whichever murti is already the centre of your mandir, and it keeps working when you change one.

How it is carved

The form follows the courtyard jhulas of the Vrindavan havelis — two uprights on a stepped plinth, a carved top beam, and a scalloped cusped arch bridging the span. Our carvers block the uprights and the beam from one grade of stone so the tone matches across the piece, then cut the relief by hand: the lotus-petal moulding around the plinth, the leaf panels running up the shafts, the scrolling spandrels either side of the arch. The seat is worked separately and hung from a set of polished brass chains, which we source and fit rather than make ourselves. Every visible face is finished by hand at the honing stage, so the grain stays open and the tool transitions read as tool transitions.

Sizing it for your mandir

At 18 inches tall the jhula reads as the middle object in a home mandir: taller than a thali, shorter than a full mandir cabinet. It measures roughly 14 inches across the uprights and 8 inches front to back, so it wants a shelf with real depth — a 10-inch ledge is tight, a 12-inch one is comfortable. Expect around 18 kg once the plinth is counted, which is more than it looks; a stone or hardwood shelf carries it without trouble, a floating glass one usually will not. Families most often bring a jhula out for Janmashtami and the Jhulan days and then leave it in place year round, so choose the position for the whole year rather than the week.

Making it yours

Everything here is cut to order, so the piece can be shaped around your mandir rather than the other way round. The changes people ask for most are height — 12, 15 and 24 inch versions of this same form all work — a wider seat if the murti is larger than 7 inches, a longer or shorter chain drop, and the stone itself, since the same jhula reads very differently in Makrana white.
