What the attar bottle set is

Attar — the oil-based perfume distilled in Kannauj and carried across the subcontinent long before alcohol-based scent arrived — has always been kept in small stoppered vessels, and in Rajasthan a bridal trousseau still travels with a few of them. This set puts that convention into stone. Three slender bottles stand graduated in height, each cut with a faceted shoulder and a band of diamond-and-petal carving, each closed with a tapered brass screw stopper. They sit in their own recesses inside a carved marble case whose lid lifts back on a small brass-finish hinge, so the set is handed over as one presented object rather than three loose pieces. The ornament is deliberately non-devotional: geometry around the bodies and the case walls, a single lotus rosette on the inside of the lid. Nothing about it belongs to a shrine, which is what makes it easy to give.

The Makrana marble and the brass stoppers

The bottles and the case are cut from Makrana white marble, quarried in Nagaur district in Rajasthan and the same stone the Taj Mahal was built from. It is a brilliant neutral white with a fine, compact, faintly sugary grain and hairline grey veins that read as stone rather than as pattern. At five inches, grain matters more than veining: the piece is seen at hand distance, so the surface is taken to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror gloss, which keeps the carved diamond band crisp instead of drowning it in reflection. The stoppers are the one element that is not stone. They are brass — sourced and fitted, not cast to order — turned with a knurled collar and a tapered finial, finished to the warm golden satin that carries against white marble. The hinge and catch are ordinary brass-finish hardware, chosen because they have to work every time.

Size, capacity and caring for the marble

Each bottle stands about five inches to the tip of its stopper, and the case is roughly nine inches across — small enough to hand over, heavy enough in marble that it does not feel like a token. A vessel this size holds a few millilitres, which is the right quantity for attar: it is worn a drop at a time on the wrist and behind the ear, never sprayed. Decant with a dropper rather than pouring, and keep the stoppers screwed home between uses. Marble takes an oil spill far better than it takes citrus, vinegar or anything else acidic, so wipe the case with a dry cloth and only occasionally with a barely damp one, and blot a spill rather than letting it stand. Left open on a dressing table with the bottles out, the case works as a ring tray.

Everything here is made to order, so treat this piece as a starting point rather than a fixed listing. The count moves first — three is the trousseau number, but twos, fives and sevens are carved the same way and the case is cut to whatever count you settle on. The bodies can stay plain and polished, be fluted, or take a parchin kari inlay line in coloured stone when the set is going to a wedding party rather than a family. Stoppers can be brass or a brass-finish metal in the same profile. A name or a wedding date can be carved or inlaid into the inside of the lid, which is the part the recipient sees first when they open it.
