About This Piece

The stone

Makrana white marble is quarried in Nagaur district, Rajasthan — the same seam that faced the Taj Mahal in the seventeenth century and has been worked continuously since. It is a dense, close-grained calcite stone, compact enough to hold a fine chisel line without crumbling and cool enough to be genuinely useful under dough. On this chakla the grain reads as a quiet crystalline white with the faintest grey hairline veining, nothing louder than a pencil mark. Because Makrana is a natural stone rather than a composite, every board carries its own veining, so no two come out matching exactly. The finish is a soft satin polish rather than a mirror: it wipes clean, it does not flare under a kitchen light, and it leaves enough tooth on the working face that a rolled roti stays where you put it.

The carving underneath

A marble chakla is usually a plain disc — flat on top, flat and unfinished below. This one is carved on its underside with a lotus medallion: a raised eight-petal flower inside a beaded boss, ringed by a border of pointed petals cut in low relief. Putting the carving there is a practical decision rather than a decorative one. A chakla spends far more of its life stored than in use, so the face nobody sees while it is working becomes the face it shows the rest of the time. Stood on edge against a kitchen wall or on an open shelf, it reads as a carved marble medallion. The relief is kept shallow so the board still sits dead flat on a counter when turned back over, and the rim carries a small bevel so it lifts cleanly with one hand.

Using it in the kitchen

The board is 10 inches across, which is the working size for a home kitchen — wide enough for a full roti or a puri without dough running off the edge, small enough to store upright in a cabinet or lean beside the tawa. The belan is turned from the same marble, with shaped ends that give the hands a stop. The weight of the stone does most of the pressing, so the roll takes less force than a wooden pin, and marble stays cool through a long session of dough. Wash it with warm water and a soft cloth, then dry it before storing. Keep lemon, vinegar and cut tomato off the surface: the acid etches calcite over time and dulls the polish. Store the belan dry too, since standing water will leave a mark on porous stone.

Making it yours

Size is the first thing most households change — 8 inches for a compact kitchen, 12 for one that rolls in quantity. The medallion can be swapped for another motif: a paisley, a plain moulded ring, or a family initial cut into the centre all sit comfortably in the same depth of relief. A heavier turning on the belan is straightforward, and the set can be made in Vietnam white marble or black stone instead. Every piece is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and TMW carries the brief from first drawing through to delivery at your door.
