The stone

Makrana white marble is quarried at Makrana in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, from beds worked continuously for centuries and best known as the stone of the Taj Mahal. It is dense and fine-grained, compact enough to hold a crisp edge on a three-millimetre flute without the arris crumbling, which is why small carved objects last in it where softer decorative marbles chip at the corners. The colour reads a bright natural white with the faintest cream undertone, crossed by grey hairline veins no wider than a pencil line. On an object this size those veins become part of the design rather than a background texture — they run across the lid and catch the eye before the carving does, and no two boxes carry the same pattern. The surface is taken to a soft satin polish instead of a mirror, so the stone keeps a little tooth under the hand and does not hold every fingerprint on a dressing table.

A box that actually opens

Most marble boxes sold as gifts are a hollowed block with a loose lid you lift off and set down somewhere; this keepsake box is built to work as a box. Two small brass butt hinges are let into the back edge so the lid swings and stays attached, and a single knob turned in dark walnut sits at the centre of the lid — wood because it stays warm to the touch and gives the fingers something to hold that polished stone does not. The body is fluted on all four faces, each channel cut by hand and stopped cleanly above a moulded plinth that steps out at the base and lifts the box off whatever it stands on. Nothing is glued on for effect: the marble body and lid are the whole of the piece, and the brass and the walnut are fittings, kept small on purpose so the stone stays the subject.

Living with it at seven inches

At seven inches wide, four and a half deep and just under four tall with the lid down, the keepsake box is a dressing-table and desk object rather than a display piece. The cavity takes rings, cufflinks, collar stays, a rudraksha mala, spare keys, a folded note — the small things that otherwise migrate around a bedroom. Marble earns its place in that job for an unglamorous reason: at around three kilos the box stays put when you lift the lid one-handed, and the stone runs cool, so nothing inside warms up sitting near a window. It also reads quietly in a room. The fluting throws enough shadow for the box to hold its own against a plain wall, and the stepped plinth keeps the underside clear of a wet bathroom counter. Set two on a console and they group well, though the piece is drawn to stand alone.

Care, and making it yours

Marble asks for little: wipe the box with a soft dry cloth, and keep perfume, nail-polish remover, lemon and acidic cleaners off the polished faces — calcite etches where those sit, and the dull patch will not buff out at home. A drop of stone sealer once a year is enough for a dressing table or a desk. Every piece is made to order, so these dimensions are a starting point. The box can run longer for a desk, deeper for jewellery, or shallower as a lidded ring dish. The flutes can give way to a plain body, a pierced jali band or a carved floral border; the knob can be turned in a lighter wood or replaced with a marble finial; a name or a date can be engraved into the lid for a wedding or a housewarming.
