Makrana White Marble & Brass Table Lamp, 18in

The stone

Makrana marble comes out of the quarries at Makrana, in Nagaur district, Rajasthan — the same seam that clad the Taj Mahal and the Dilwara temples, worked continuously for close to a thousand years. It is a dense, low-porosity calcite marble, which is what a lamp base wants: it holds a crisp edge on a fluted shaft without crumbling, and it takes a satin polish that reads soft rather than glassy. The colour is a bright natural white with the faintest warm undertone and occasional grey hairline veins no wider than a pencil line. Against brass that warmth matters — a cooler, bluer marble fights the metal, while Makrana sits beside it. The stone also does the practical work: roughly six kilos of it in the column and base keep an 18-inch lamp from being tipped by a passing sleeve.

The fluted column and the brass

The column is turned as a plain cylinder first, then the flutes are cut down its face by hand, each channel stopped cleanly where the shaft meets the stepped square base rather than running off the edge. That stop is the detail worth looking at closely: it is cut, not moulded, and the small differences between one flute's terminal and the next are what tell you a person made it. Above the shaft sits a slim polished brass collar, then a brass stem and a harp carrying the shade. The proportion is deliberate — the marble is the mass of the piece and the brass is a line drawn on it, not a competing material. A plain off-white linen drum shade finishes it, because a patterned shade would pull attention off the flutes.

Where it sits

At 18 inches to the top of the shade, this is a lamp for furniture rather than for a floor: a console table in an entry, a bedside table, a desk, the end of a sideboard. The base is a five-inch square, so it takes very little surface and can sit close to a wall. The cord runs out through a channel drilled at the back of the base, which keeps the front elevation clean. Ordered as a pair it works well flanking a bed or a mirror, and the flute count is matched across the two so they read as siblings. Living with marble and brass

Marble and brass age differently, and it is worth knowing which you are choosing. The marble wants a dry soft cloth and the occasional wipe with a barely damp one; what it will not forgive is an acidic cleaner, or a spill of lemon, vinegar or wine left to sit, which etches a dull mark into the polish that cannot be wiped away. Blot, do not wipe. The brass is supplied bare by default, so it mellows over a year or two into a softer, deeper colour — most owners want that. If you would rather it stayed bright, ask for it lacquered, though a lacquered surface should never meet a metal polish. A felt pad under the base protects a waxed tabletop.
