What a chooda box is for

The chooda is the set of red-and-ivory bangles a Punjabi bride wears from the morning of her wedding, and once the traditional wearing period is over the set has to live somewhere. In most homes that ends up being a cloth bundle at the back of an almirah. This box is cut for that job — a round marble container roughly 7 inches across and deep enough to take a full set laid flat rather than forced in on edge, with straight interior walls so nothing snags on the way down. The lid lifts clean away; there is no hinge to work loose and no metal fitting to mark the bangles over the years. Handed over at the wedding it reads as a gift, and a decade later it is still the thing the chooda actually sits in.

Makrana marble, and the inlay on the lid

Makrana marble comes out of Nagaur district in Rajasthan and is the stone behind the white surfaces of the Taj Mahal — dense, close-grained and a bright natural white rather than grey or blue-cast. It holds a soft satin polish without turning glassy, which is what keeps carved detail readable on a piece this small. The lid carries a radial rosette worked in parchin kari, the Mughal hardstone inlay tradition that moved from Agra into the Jaipur ateliers: carnelian for the deep orange petals, mother-of-pearl for the pale iridescent ones. Each fragment is cut to shape, seated into a channel chiselled out of the marble and ground back level, so the finished lid reads as one continuous surface under a fingertip. A slim bead ring frames the rosette, and the outer wall carries a band of shallow floral panels. All of it is cut by hand by the artisan families we work with in Jaipur.

The case it arrives in

The marble box does not travel loose: it seats into a die-cut recess inside a rigid covered case, cradled so it cannot shift, with the case lid standing open behind it when the gift is handed over. The case is sourced and fitted around the piece rather than carved — the stone is the whole of the object you are buying, and the packaging exists to present it. A wedding gift is judged partly on the moment it is opened, and a boxed piece survives being carried through a crowded reception in a way a wrapped one does not. For families ordering more than one — a box for the bride, smaller matching ones for her sisters — the recesses are cut to the pieces going into them, so a set of three arrives looking like a set.

Sizing, care and making it yours

At 7 inches across and about 3 inches tall the box sits on a dressing table, a dresser shelf or inside a wardrobe without needing a shelf cleared for it, and at roughly 3 kg it stays where it is put. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth and nothing else: marble is calcite, so lemon, vinegar and most household cleaners etch a dull patch into the polish, and turmeric or sindoor left sitting on the surface will stain. If you want it larger for a fuller set, quieter with a plain carved lid instead of the inlay, or worked in a different inlay palette — malachite green, lapis blue — tell us and we will design it with you and brief the sculptor. Names and a wedding date can be cut into the underside.
