About This Piece

Cloth, in the least likely material

A length of heavy fabric falls over a concealed block, gathers, and breaks into a pool along the base. There is no figure underneath it and no subject beyond the cloth itself. What the piece is really about is the gap between what the material is — 14 inches of dense, cold, hard Makrana marble — and what your eye insists it is looking at, which is something soft enough to move if you touched it.

Why this is the hard one

Drapery has been the test piece in stone sculpture for a very long time, because folds only convince if the undercuts go deep enough to throw real shadow, and every millimetre of undercut is a chance to lose the whole panel. It is carved down from a single block, working from the outer crests inward, and it is the one object in this collection that cannot be roughed out quickly. Makrana marble suits it because its fine, even, slightly sugary grain takes a soft polish that scatters light across a curve the way cloth does, rather than reflecting it in a hard line.

Where it sits

It has no front and no back worth speaking of, so it works on an open shelf, an island, or a plinth where you can walk around it. Side light does more for it than overhead light. There is nothing devotional about it and nothing to use it for — it is simply an object.

Making yours

Height, the weight of the cloth and how far the hem pools are all open, and the same study works at 24 inches as a floor-adjacent piece. It is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and this one is worth talking through before it starts. Allow four to eight weeks.
