A kumkum and haldi pair, kept together

Kumkum and haldi travel together in almost every Indian household ritual — the vermilion for the tilak, the turmeric for the haldi ceremony and for the daily pooja thali. This set keeps them that way: two squat cylindrical vessels of Makrana white marble, each about four inches tall, carved with a fluted body and a raised floral rosette on every face. Each vessel is closed by a shallow domed brass lid that screws down onto the carved mouth and finishes in a small turned finial, so it can be opened with one hand and shut again without spilling powder. The pair sits in a rigid presentation box on a cream die-cut insert cut to the shape of each base, so the set can be handed over exactly as it arrives rather than wrapped.

Makrana marble, and the brass that closes it

The stone is Makrana white marble, quarried in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, and worked in the region for centuries — the same quarries that supplied the Taj Mahal. At four inches its fine crystalline grain matters more than it would on a large piece: the walls are thin, the fluting is shallow, and a coarser stone would chip at the rim. Each vessel is hollowed and carved by hand by the sculptors we work with, then taken to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror, so the surface holds light without glaring under a lamp. The brass lids are sourced and fitted, not cast here — a brass collar seated into the carved mouth, then the domed cap and finial that screw down onto it. Brass is used because it closes cleanly against loose powder and does not mark white marble the way a painted metal can.

Giving it, and using it afterwards

At four inches the set is small enough to hand out in numbers, which is the point of it: a wedding return gift, a favour set at each place for the haldi or mehendi, or a bulk order placed before the season. It also has a life after the day — kumkum in one vessel, haldi in the other, going straight onto a pooja thali or a dressing table in the couple's new home. Care is simple. Wipe the marble with a dry or barely damp cloth, since loose powder lifts straight off, and keep it out of standing water; water left to sit and oil-based sindoor will both mark the stone over time. Unscrew the lids fully when cleaning so no powder cakes into the thread.

Making it yours

Most of this set is open to change. We adjust the count for a full guest list, add a third vessel for akshat, change the colour of the box lining, or engrave the couple's names and the wedding date on the brass lid or on a plate set into the box. The vessels can also be cut in Vietnam white marble, Dholpur pink sandstone or black stone if the rest of your gifting sits on a different palette. We design the set with you, brief the sculptors, and follow the order through to your door.
