Handcrafted Makrana White Marble Shiva Lingam on Lotus Yoni Base, 30in

Makrana marble comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, from the same belt of quarries that supplied the Taj Mahal and centuries of North Indian temple building. It is a dense, finely crystalline stone, and that density is what makes it the traditional choice for a lingam meant to receive water every morning — the surface takes abhishek for decades without pitting or clouding. On this 30-inch piece the marble reads a bright natural white with only the faintest warmth, and a few grey hairline veins drift through the octagonal base where the block was cut. Carving begins with the rough block squared to its finished footprint, after which the yoni bed and its pranala spout are cut as one continuous form so there is no join for water to find. The shaft is turned true by hand and checked against a template from several angles, since any wobble in a plain cylinder shows immediately. The lotus-petal band around the octagonal rim is chiselled panel by panel, each petal set out by eye against the eight facets. Polishing then runs through progressively finer grits to a soft satin — bright enough to hold light, matte enough that the petal shadows stay legible. No machine finishing touches the carved rim. A lingam is Shiva in aniconic form, the oldest and most widely worshipped representation in the Shaiva tradition. Its yoni base — the jaladhari — is not ornament: it gathers the water, milk and bilva leaves of daily abhishek and carries them out through the pranala, the projecting spout, which by long-standing convention is set facing north. The design here keeps the shaft entirely plain and places every carved element in the base, so the lotus reads as a platform rather than as competition for the form it holds. At 30 inches on an 18-inch octagonal footprint, this is a mandir-scale installation rather than a shelf piece — roughly 145 kg, so it wants a masonry plinth or a reinforced marble platform, not a wooden shelf. Leave clearance in front of the spout for a thali or a drainage channel, and keep about a foot of open floor on the approach side for abhishek. Set against a plain back wall, the lotus band catches raking daylight and does most of the visual work. Made to order in Jaipur.
