Handcrafted Makrana White Marble Panchmukhi Shiva Lingam, 18in

Five faces, one stone. The Panchmukhi form gathers Shiva's five aspects — Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha and the upward-facing Ishana — around a single lingam shaft, and this 18-inch piece carves four of them in the round with the fifth understood at the crown, the way Agamic workshops have set them for generations. The marble is Makrana, quarried in Nagaur district of Rajasthan: the same calcite-dense white stone used in the Taj Mahal and the Dilwara temples. It holds a hairline chisel line without crumbling, which is exactly what a face-carved lingam demands. Work begins with a single block, rough-cut to the yoni's rectangle and the shaft's ovoid before any face is touched. The artisan lays out the four profiles around the drum so no one crowds its neighbour, then cuts down through the jata, the beaded rows at the collar and the tripundra on each brow. Faces, eyelids and the jaldhari lip are finished entirely by hand — no machine touches them — and the surface is carried up through progressively finer abrasives to a satin polish that keeps the grain readable rather than mirroring it. A lingam is aniconic by nature, and the Panchmukhi variant is the classical exception: the formless is given faces without becoming a figure. Each face carries the horizontal tripundra of the Shaiva tradition, and the yoni base runs out to a spout, the jaldhari, that carries abhishekam water clear of the shaft. Convention sets that spout to the north, so the piece is oriented within the mandir rather than simply placed facing the viewer. At 18 inches with a roughly 14-inch yoni, the lingam sits well on a home mandir shelf, a low wooden chowki, or a dedicated alcove rather than a crowded console. Leave a hand's width around the base so water can be poured and wiped away without shifting the piece, and give it a solid support — the assembly runs to about 40 kg. Daily abhishekam with water or milk is precisely what the drainage geometry is built for, and Makrana takes it without staining when wiped dry. Sizes from 9 inches up to 3 feet are carved to order, as are black marble and Vietnam white versions, a plain nishkal shaft without faces, and a deeper yoni for temple-scale abhishekam.
