Handcrafted Vietnam White Marble Janeudhari Shiva Lingam, 15in

Cut from a single block of Vietnam White Marble quarried near Da Nang, this fifteen-inch shivling holds the cool, bright white that separates the Vietnamese stone from the warmer cream of Makrana. The Marble Mountain belt outside Da Nang — Ngu Hanh Son — has supplied carving stone to the region's statuary workshops for roughly a century and a half, and the fine, compact crystal that makes it a favourite for Buddha figures suits a lingam just as well: the shaft takes an even, unbroken surface with almost no veining to interrupt the line of the dome. Tilak Mandirwala works with independent master sculptors in Jaipur, and every lingam is made to order rather than pulled from stock. The block is squared and the jaladhari roughed out first, then the shaft is turned true by hand so the dome reads round from every angle. The janeu is cut last, when there is no more material left to lose — a single raised thread chased across the shaft with fine chisels, then eased by hand so the bead line stays crisp against the plain field around it. Polishing runs in stages, all by hand, up to a satin sheen. A lingam carved with the yajnopavita — the sacred thread worn across the left shoulder — is described as janeudhari, and that one carved line is what distinguishes it from a plain shaft. It sits in a jaladhari, the round yoni base whose channel carries away the water, milk and honey of abhishek. By convention the spout is set towards the north in shrine layout, so the flow always leaves on the same side and the front of the lingam stays clear for the worshipper. At fifteen inches from platform to crown, the piece is scaled for a home pooja room rather than a temple floor — large enough to hold a shelf or chowki as the focal murti, small enough that daily jal abhishek stays practical without a drainage arrangement. Keep the spout side open so a vessel can sit under it, and leave a hand's width of empty platform around the base; the round jaladhari reads best when nothing crowds its rim. The cool white also holds its tone under the warm lamps most pooja rooms use. The same design can be cut from nine to thirty-six inches, with the janeu left off if a plain shaft is preferred. It is also made in Makrana white marble and in black marble, and a square plinth can be integrated underneath for a fixed installation.
