The four pieces and what each one does

A pooja thali set is the working tray of a daily aarti, and this one carries four pieces cut to sit together. The thali itself is the 12-inch round tray, with a rim deep enough to hold a lit diya steady and a floor wide enough to leave room for kumkum, akshat and a few flowers. The panchpatra is the small round water vessel that holds the water used through the ritual. The achmani — the spouted spoon resting beside it — lifts a measured amount of that water for achman and for offering. The fourth piece is a shallow lotus diya, cut as an open flower with a raised centre so a cotton wick sits proud of the ghee. Nothing in the set is ornament alone; each of the four has a job in the sequence.

Makrana marble and the inlaid border

Makrana comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, from quarries worked for centuries — it is the stone of the Taj Mahal, and it remains the reference white for Indian ritual objects because it stays bright rather than yellowing with age. The grain is fine and crystalline, so it takes a soft satin polish that feels warm under the hand rather than glassy. Around the rim of the thali runs a floral vine in parchin kari, the Mughal inlay technique still practised between Agra and Jaipur, in which every leaf and petal is cut from coloured stone, shaped by hand and set into a chased recess in the marble. On this set the vine is worked in carnelian red, green and ochre against the white, so the border reads clearly from across a room without competing with the deity above it.

Where it sits, and how to look after it

At 12 inches across, the thali reads as a full aarti tray rather than a token one — it wants about a foot and a half of clear surface, which is roughly the width of a standard mandir shelf or the front edge of a puja chowki. It works as the everyday set in a home pooja room, and it travels well to a griha pravesh or a wedding as a gift, because a marble set is one of the few ritual objects that genuinely gets handed down. Marble is calcite and therefore soft, so treat it as you would any polished stone: wipe the tray after use, keep camphor and burning wicks in the diya rather than directly on the tray, and keep lemon, vinegar and acidic cleaners away from the inlay, which dulls faster than the marble around it.
