A pair of candle holders, twelve inches tall, carved in natural white marble. The form is a tall tapering column with fluted grooves running its length and a carved lotus border at the foot — a shape borrowed from temple pillar work and reduced to something that sits on a console or a pooja shelf. They are sold and carved as a pair, and the fluting is cut to match across both.

The hand-painted gold and floral bands

The decoration is hand-painted rather than printed: bands of gold leaf at the collar and base, with fine red-and-green floral motifs between them. Because it is applied by hand, the two are close but never mechanically identical — the brushwork varies slightly from one to the other, which is the mark of the work being done by a person. The marble beneath is left polished, so candlelight picks up the stone as well as the paint.

Using and caring for the candle holders

They are made for use, not display alone. A lit taper at this height throws a low, warm light that reflects off the polished flutes, which is why the form persists in prayer rooms — it lights a small space without glare. They suit a pooja alcove, an entry console, a dining table, or a bedside pair. To care for them, wipe with a soft dry cloth; if something needs lifting, use a barely damp cloth and dry at once. Acidic or abrasive cleaners will dull both the paintwork and the polish, and marble is porous enough that a spill of anything acidic should be wiped immediately.
