About This Piece
A three-foot Ganesha on his throne
This Ganesha sits upright on a carved throne, his right foot resting on a small footstool and his left leg drawn up on the seat. The lower right hand is raised in abhaya, the gesture of reassurance, and a small red Om is painted on the palm. The trunk turns to his left, toward the hand that holds his sweet, which is the form most families keep at home.
The upper hands lift two tall, scrolling emblems that rise level with the crown, and behind the head a wide carved prabhavali spreads out like a sunburst. At the foot of the throne, on the right, his mouse sits up on its haunches looking toward him.
Carving and colour
The piece is cut from Vietnam white marble, a dense stone that is whiter and cooler than most Indian white marble, and it is polished to a soft shine. The colour is kept to a minimum: a gold and orange tilak on the forehead, painted eyes, and a fine orange line down the trunk. Everything else is the stone itself, so the carving of the crown, the necklaces and the folds of the dhoti carries the piece.
The throne, the figure and the stepped base are worked as one composition, with a carved band of leaves running around the plinth.
Size, and where it suits
The statue is 36 inches tall. At three feet it is a sanctum piece: large enough to be the main murti of a small temple or a dedicated pooja room, and to hold its own at the entrance of a large home or a community hall. A piece of this size is heavy and needs a firm, level surface and two or more people to place it. Exact width, depth and weight are confirmed before dispatch.
About the picture on this page
The photograph is of this exact statue. It was taken against a black studio cloth, and that background has been replaced with a plain one so the carving is easier to see. The statue itself has not been altered or redrawn.
