Vietnam White Marble Large Meditating Buddha for an Atrium Water Feature, 6 Feet

This is the large commission piece of the collection: a six-foot Buddha meant to hold a whole atrium, set on a tall square plinth that rises out of a wide, shallow pool. He sits cross-legged in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation, with both hands resting in the lap and the eyes half closed. Below him a broad double lotus, two rows of full rounded petals, carries the figure, and the plinth beneath lifts it clear of the water so the whole statue reads from across a lobby or down from an upper gallery.

Scale for a large space

At 72 inches overall, the figure, the lotus and the plinth are proportioned as one composition rather than a statue placed on a box. In a glass-roofed atrium, a hotel courtyard or the hall of a meditation centre, a smaller piece gets lost against columns and planting; at this size the Buddha becomes the point the space is arranged around, with the pool as a still reflection at his feet. The plinth height can be adjusted so the face sits where you want it from the main viewing point, whether that is the entrance, a seating area or a balcony above.

The stone: Vietnam white marble

Vietnam white marble is a cool, clean white, closer to fresh milk than to ivory, with only faint grey clouding in places. Under daylight from a glass roof it stays crisp rather than turning cream, which matters at this size, where a large surface of warm stone can look yellow against green planting and dark water. It takes a soft satin polish: highlights roll gently across the shoulders, the robe folds and each lotus petal, and thin edges such as the earlobes carry a slight translucency.

A six-foot marble Buddha on a plinth in a pool is planned with your architect or site team before carving starts.
