Vietnam White Marble Meditating Buddha for an Indoor Water Feature, 4 Feet

This four-foot Buddha sits cross-legged in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation: both hands rest in the lap, right palm over left, and the eyes are half closed in an inward gaze. He is seated on a broad double lotus base, two tiers of full, rounded petals, with a plain plinth below. The proportions are deliberate. At 48 inches the figure holds its own beside a reflecting pool or a still water channel, and the wide lotus lets the statue sit at the water's edge so the petals read just above the waterline.

The stone: Vietnam white marble

Vietnam white marble is a cooler, cleaner white than most Indian marbles, closer to fresh milk than to ivory, with only faint grey clouding in places. It takes a soft satin polish well. Highlights roll gently across the shoulders, the folds of the robe and the swell of each lotus petal, and thin edges such as the earlobes and the robe hem carry a slight translucency in good light. Beside water that coolness matters: the white stays crisp against green leaves and dark reflections instead of turning cream.

Made for an indoor water feature

The piece is planned for a covered courtyard, an atrium pool, a spa entrance or a meditation room with a water wall. A satin-polished surface is easy to wipe clean of mineral spotting from splashes, and the solid double lotus base gives the figure a stable footprint on a stone ledge or a raised plinth at the pool's edge.
