About This Piece
This 18-inch Buddha sits cross-legged on a lotus base with his right hand raised at the chest, thumb and forefinger meeting in a small circle. That is vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching: the circle stands for the Dharma, complete and unbroken, passed from teacher to student in conversation. The left hand rests open in the lap, the eyes are lowered, and the head carries the ushnisha and tight rows of curls, with a soft halo behind the shoulders.
Sized for a tabletop fountain
Most water-feature Buddhas are planned for a courtyard or a pond edge. This one is the household size. At 18 inches it sits comfortably on a low table, a console or a meditation shelf beside a shallow stone bowl, a small bubbling fountain or an indoor water wall. The double lotus base lifts the figure clear of the water line, so he is always seated above the bowl, never at floor level, and the broad footprint keeps him steady on a polished or wooden surface.
