Vietnam White Marble Earth-Touching Buddha for an Indoor Koi Pond, 3 Feet

At the moment of his enlightenment, the Buddha was challenged to prove his right to sit beneath the bodhi tree. He answered without a word: he reached his right hand down past his knee and touched the earth, calling it to witness. This is the bhumisparsha mudra, and it is the form shown here. The left hand rests open in the lap, the legs are folded in full lotus, and the right hand reaches down over the right knee with the fingertips toward the ground.

The figure sits on a double lotus base above a carved scroll plinth, with a round halo of leaf work behind the head. The face is calm and the eyes are lowered, the hair is set in small curls rising to the ushnisha, and the robe crosses the left shoulder in soft, deep folds. At 36 inches tall it is a commanding presence beside water without overwhelming the space around it.

Vietnam white marble suits this piece because it is a cool, clean white with very little warmth in it, and the soft satin polish lets the light move across the robe and the lotus petals without glare. Beside a koi pond the stone reads crisp against moving water and orange fish.
