About This Piece
The likeness
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is one of the few Indian figures a portrait has to get exactly right, and the details that carry the recognition sit as much in the dress as in the face. This bust puts him in the uniform of the Azad Hind Fauj: the peaked service cap with its badge, the buttoned tunic with a high stand collar and shoulder boards, and the round wire-framed spectacles no other freedom-movement portrait shares. The head is squarely forward, clean-shaven, with the level and unhurried expression familiar from the photographs taken in Singapore in 1943, when he took command of the Indian National Army. Born in Cuttack in 1897, Bose is commemorated across Bengal, Odisha and the armed forces, and a bust of him is studied closely by people who have known that face all their lives. The sculptors we work with model the head from reference photographs long before a chisel touches stone.
The stone
Black marble is the trade name for the jet-black stone Indian civic sculpture has settled on for portrait work, and it earns the place for two reasons. It takes a true mirror polish — one of the very few stones that will — so the planes of a cheek, a cap peak or a collar edge read as clean sweeps rather than as surface texture. And it is dense, closed-grained and untroubled by weather, so a bust set outdoors on a parade ground or a school forecourt will not chalk, stain or grow the grey film that an open white marble picks up in a monsoon city. The stone runs uniform, without the veining that would cut a line across a face at exactly the wrong place. Polished cap and tunic against the quieter, less reflective handling of the features is what gives a black portrait bust its depth.
Sizing it for the space
At 24 inches from the foot of the plinth to the top of the cap, this is the size most institutions settle on: large enough to hold an entrance hall or a memorial corner on its own, small enough that it needs no purpose-built site. Reckon on roughly 16 inches across the shoulders, 12 inches front to back, and about 95 kilograms in solid stone — a weight that wants a masonry or concrete pedestal, never a wooden console. Set that pedestal so the eyes fall near the eye level of a standing adult, which usually means 42 to 48 inches of pedestal beneath the piece. A bust at this scale suits a college foyer, a regimental or police-line memorial, a municipal park plinth, a library reading room, or a Netaji Jayanti installation unveiled on 23 January.
Ordering a portrait bust
Portrait work starts with photographs. Send whatever exists — a formal portrait, a passport photograph, even a group picture — and the sculptors we work with build the head in clay first, so the likeness can be argued over and corrected while it is still soft. Nothing is cut in stone until that model has your approval. We design the piece with you, brief the sculptor, and stay with the commission through to installation. The same bust can be taken in Makrana or Vietnam white marble where a lighter piece suits the setting, scaled up for an outdoor plinth or down for a desk, and the plinth face can carry an engraved name, dates, a unit crest or a line of dedication. Message us on WhatsApp with the photographs and a note on where it will stand.
