The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried in Vietnam and worked around Da Nang, where the stone has supported a carving trade for generations. It reads cool and neutral — a clean porcelain white rather than the warm cream of Makrana — with a fine, compact crystal structure and only faint grey hairline veining. On a portrait that matters, because a bust lives or dies on the face: an even, tight grain lets the sculptor cut an eyelid, the sharp line of a cap peak and the ribbed edge of a ribbon bar without a vein interrupting the plane at the wrong moment. This 24-inch piece is finished to a soft satin polish, which holds light on the cheekbone and jaw without the glare a mirror polish throws across a face. Light also travels a short way into the calcite and comes back out, which is why marble skin reads warm even when the stone itself is cool white.

The uniform, read in stone

The officer is shown head-and-shoulders in service dress. A peaked cap sits level on the brow with a wreathed cap badge cut in relief; the tunic below is buttoned to a stand collar, with insignia on both shoulder boards and a ribbon bar block at the chest. Breast pockets, the button placket and the collar edge are cut as real steps in the stone rather than incised lines, so they keep their shadow at a distance — which is how a memorial is actually read, from six or eight feet away across a hall. The face is clean-shaven and held level, the expression closed and steady rather than smiling. The bust is mounted on a stepped rectangular plinth that raises the shoulders and leaves a plain front face where an inscription can be cut.

In a family memorial room a low stone plinth against a plain wall works well, with the bust set so the eyes fall at standing eye level. A lamp placed to one side is kinder than a ceiling downlight — it keeps a soft shadow across the cheek and stops the face flattening out. Leave a clear foot on either side so the profile stays readable.
