About This Piece

Carving a likeness from your photographs

A portrait bust has one job: it has to look like the person. The work starts with the photographs you send — ideally a front view, a three-quarter view and a profile, plus one candid shot that catches how he actually held his head. A clay study is built from those first, and you see it before a chisel touches stone, because a correction in clay takes an afternoon and a correction in marble takes a new block. Once you sign off on the clay, the sculptors we work with transfer the proportions to the stone using pointing measurements, the method portrait workshops have used since the Roman period. The spectacles, the knot of the tie, the fall of the lapel and the set of the mouth are all cut by hand at the end — those are the details a viewer reads first, and they decide whether the likeness holds.

Vietnam white marble, and why it suits a face

This bust is cut from Vietnam white marble, a cool neutral white stone quarried in Vietnam and carved to order in Jaipur. Its grain is fine and crystalline with very little veining, which matters more on a portrait than on any other subject: a heavy vein running through a cheek or across the bridge of the nose cannot be hidden, and a near-uniform block lets the modelling of the eyelids, brow and mouth carry the whole likeness. The white is clean rather than cream, so the piece does not yellow against pale walls and glass the way a warmer marble can. It is finished to a soft satin polish — enough sheen to give the suit its planes and the hair its depth, without the hard glare of a mirror polish, which flattens a face and throws highlights across the eyes.

Sizing a 24-inch bust for a lobby or boardroom

At 24 inches the bust stands two feet from the top of its plinth, close to life size across the shoulders and a little over life size at the head — the scale portrait sculptors have used for institutional commissions for centuries, large enough to hold a room without turning into a monument. Set on a pedestal at chest height it meets a standing visitor at eye level, which is what makes a founder's bust work in a reception area rather than simply occupy a corner of it. Allow about 20 inches of clear width and a plain wall behind it; patterned stone or a busy noticeboard behind the head competes with the carving. In a boardroom, a sideboard or a wall niche usually suits it better than the head of the table, where the bust sits behind whoever is speaking.

Making it yours

A founder's bust is a one-off commission by definition, so treat the specification above as a starting point. The same portrait can be cut at 18 inches for a cabin or a study, or scaled past life size for an entrance hall. Makrana white marble reads warmer and black stone reads far darker, if either suits the room better. The plinth can carry a carved or inlaid inscription — a name, a designation, dates of service — and can be left square, moulded or stepped to match the joinery around it. Send us the photographs and tell us where the bust will stand; we will come back with a recommendation on size, stone and plinth, and stay with the commission from the clay study through to installation.
