The stone from Makrana

Makrana marble comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, from quarries that have been worked for centuries — the same beds that supplied the Taj Mahal. It is a dense calcite marble with a fine, lightly sugary crystal structure, and that is exactly why portrait work suits it: the stone takes a sharp edge on a nostril or an eyelid without crumbling, and holds that edge for generations. This bust is finished to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror gloss, so the surface reads as skin and cloth instead of glass. Faint grey hairline veins run through the block here and there; they belong to the stone rather than counting as a flaw, and no two blocks carry the same pattern. Makrana also behaves well indoors — it does not yellow under electric light the way softer white stones can.

Getting Tagore's likeness right

Rabindranath Tagore is one of the harder faces in Indian portraiture, because almost everyone who walks past this bust already knows it. The master sculptors we work with build the likeness from the late portraits — the high domed forehead, the long hair swept back off the temples, the beard falling in waves to the chest, and the wide-necked jobba draped loosely over both shoulders. The expression is held just short of a smile: attentive rather than solemn, the way he appears in most Santiniketan-era images. Proportion matters more than fine detail at this scale, so the distances between brow, nose and beard line are set first, and the hair and drapery are cut last to sit around the face rather than compete with it. If a particular portrait matters to you — a specific year, a specific angle — send it over and the carving is worked from that reference.

Sizing it for a hall or library

At 24 inches from the base of the plinth to the crown of the head, this sits at roughly life scale for a head-and-shoulders portrait: about 15 inches across the shoulders, 11 inches deep, and close to 70 kg in solid marble. The weight decides the mounting more than anything else. A light timber display stand will not take it, so plan on a masonry, stone or steel-framed pedestal, positioned over a beam or a load-bearing wall line rather than mid-span on a timber floor. Set the pedestal height so the eyes land between 60 and 66 inches off the ground, which puts them level with an adult standing a pace away. Leave roughly three feet of clear wall behind the piece, and keep that wall plain — the carving already supplies all the detail the corner needs.

Every piece here is made to order in Jaipur, so the specification stays open. Tagore can be cut at 18 inches for a principal's office or scaled past life size for an auditorium foyer. Makrana white is the usual choice for portrait work, though black marble gives a more formal reading that is worth comparing before a memorial-hall commission is settled. The plinth can carry an inscription — a name, the dates 1861–1941, a line from the Gitanjali, or a donor dedication for a commemorative gift.
