A four-foot Durga on her lion, for the open air

A four-foot Durga seated on her lion, carved for the open air. The goddess is multi-armed, holding the trishul, sword and mace, her lower right hand raised in abhaya — the gesture that means do not be afraid. The lion is carved full-bodied beside and beneath her, mane deep-cut, one paw forward. Both rest on a moulded plinth that lifts the murti clear of the ground.

The stone is Dholpur pink sandstone from eastern Rajasthan, the warm blush-toned stone of Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Unlike marble, it is genuinely weather-ready: it holds carved detail outdoors for generations and weathers to a softer, deeper tone rather than staining. The finish is matte and soft-honed, with a fine even sandy grain that reads beautifully in low afternoon light.

Because the piece is destined for a courtyard, garden, or temple entrance, the relief is cut deeper than an indoor murti would be — the shadows do the work at a distance. Master sculptors in our Jaipur network carve it by hand from a single block.
