About This Piece
Shailputri is the first of the nine Navadurga forms — the daughter of the mountain, worshipped on the opening day of Navratri. This 18-inch murti shows her seated on Nandi, her bull vahana, the trishul held upright in her right hand and a half-opened lotus in her left. The crescent moon sits in her crown. Her expression is entirely calm: this is the goddess before the battle, not in it. The stone is Dholpur pink sandstone, quarried in eastern Rajasthan — the same warm stone the Mughals used at Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. It carries a soft blush-pink tone and a very fine, even sandy grain, finished matte and soft-honed rather than polished. It takes light gently, without the glare of marble, which is why it suits a sunlit courtyard shrine or a warm-toned interior so well. Master sculptors in our Jaipur network carve each piece by hand from a single block, drawing out the pleated sari, the layered ornaments, Nandi's bells and collar, and the lotus-petal plinth. Barely-perceptible asymmetry between left and right is the signature of hand work, not a flaw. Made to order. Choose your size, stone, and finish — and if you are collecting the Navadurga forms one at a time, we can match the stone and base across the set so they read as a family. Share a reference on WhatsApp and we will quote stone, size, and timeline.
