Chandraghanta is the third of the nine Navadurga forms, invoked on the third night of Navratri, and she is the one you recognise by sound as much as by sight — the half-moon set on her crown is shaped like a temple bell, a ghanta, whose ring is said to scatter fear before it ever reaches the devotee. This murti holds her exactly there: seated side-saddle on her tiger, a trishul lifted in one right hand, mace and bow held out to the left, a lotus in the lowest hand, and the free right palm open in abhaya. The expression is the difficult one to cut — alert and unafraid, but never angry. The piece is cast in marble dust composite rather than carved from quarried block. Crushed Makrana off-cuts are bound with resin, poured, cured, and then finished entirely by hand: the pleats of the sari, the beaded haars, the ribbed flank of the tiger and the lotus-medallion base are all worked with chisel and rasp after the cast leaves the mould. The result is a very fine, even grain with none of the veining of natural stone, in a warm-leaning cast white, brought to a soft satin polish that holds lamp light without turning glassy. At 24 inches it is built for a home mandir shelf or an altar niche rather than a floor pedestal — tall enough to preside over a Navratri arrangement, light enough at roughly 24 kg for two people to lift into place, and far kinder on the budget than the same piece in solid marble.
