A portrait bust is the one piece in this catalogue that cannot be designed in advance — it starts with your photographs. Three or four clear pictures of the face are usually enough: one straight on, one in three-quarter view, one in profile, and any candid shot that catches the expression the family remembers. From those the sculptor builds a clay study first, and that study comes back to you as photographs before a single chisel touches stone. Corrections at the clay stage are expected and cost nothing — the set of the mouth, the weight of the jaw, how far the spectacles sit down the nose. Only once you have signed off on the clay does the carving begin. This bust shows an elderly gentleman in a plain kurta with a buttoned collar, thick-rimmed spectacles and a trimmed white moustache, which is the arrangement most families ask for.

Makrana white marble

The stone is Makrana white marble, quarried in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan and worked continuously for centuries — it is the marble of the Taj Mahal, and it still comes out of the same hills a few hours from the Jaipur shop. For a portrait it earns its place on grain rather than on reputation. Makrana is fine, dense and lightly sugary when honed, so it holds a crisp edge at the rim of a spectacle frame and a soft one at the corner of an eye without crumbling between the two. It carries a slight warm cream undertone rather than a cold blue-white, which sits comfortably under painted skin tone and keeps the unpainted kurta and plinth from reading clinical. Hairline grey veins run through it; on a portrait they are usually steered into the shoulders and away from the face.

Hand-painted in lifelike colour

The colour goes on by hand after the carving and polishing are finished, not before. Skin is built up in thin translucent layers so the marble underneath still lends its own faint glow — a flat opaque coat kills that and leaves a face looking moulded rather than carved. Hair and moustache are left close to the stone's own white and lifted only slightly; the spectacle frames are painted a dark brown, and the kurta on this piece stays bare polished marble, which is why the collar and placket read as stone while the face reads as flesh. Families who want a fully painted garment, a coloured shawl or a sacred thread picked out can ask for it. The plinth is always left plain, so it takes an engraved name and dates cleanly.

Sizing it for your space

At 24 inches from the foot of the plinth to the crown of the head, this is close to life-size across the shoulders and reads correctly to someone standing about five feet away. It weighs around 45 kg, so it wants a solid surface — a hardwood console, a stone ledge, a purpose-built niche — rather than a hollow shelf or a glass top. Allow about 14 inches of depth and leave a hand's width of clear wall behind it; a bust pushed flat against plaster loses the shadow that gives the profile its shape. Most families keep it in a hall or a remembrance corner rather than inside the pooja room, with a lamp set to one side. Smaller 12- and 18-inch versions suit an apartment shelf, and larger pedestal-mounted busts are carved for memorial halls and trust buildings.
