The likeness

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar is carved here as most people picture him: the buttoned suit, the knotted tie, the round-rimmed spectacles, the hair combed back from a broad forehead, and a thick bound volume held in against the chest — the Constitution whose drafting committee he chaired between 1947 and 1949. The bust is cut just below the chest and rises from a plain rectangular plinth, so the whole piece reads as a portrait rather than a figure. That is the point of a bust: at 24 inches it carries the face at conversational scale and takes up no floor space at all. Every commission in this collection begins with photographs the client sends. Makrana marble, and why it holds a face

The stone is Makrana white marble, quarried in Nagaur district in Rajasthan and the same marble used on the Taj Mahal. For portrait work its behaviour matters more than its history: the grain is fine and dense, close to uniform, with only faint grey hairlines running through it. That density is what lets a carver hold a spectacle rim, the fold at a lapel, the edge of an eyelid — details that crumble in a coarser stone. It also takes paint evenly, because there are no open pores to drink pigment unevenly. Makrana in this form is an indoor stone; it is not the right choice for an exposed courtyard or a roadside pedestal, where black stone wears harder. Inside a hall, a library or an office it stays bright for decades with nothing more than regular dusting.

The hand-painted finish

This piece is finished in polychrome rather than left in plain white stone — natural skin tone on the face and hand, a deep blue suit, a white shirt, dark hair and dark spectacle rims. Painted busts are how Dr. Ambedkar is most often shown across India, and colour does something plain marble cannot: it separates the face from the clothing at a distance, so the portrait still reads from across a room. Paint is applied by hand over a satin-polished surface once carving is complete, and the plinth is deliberately left bare so the marble underneath stays visible and the piece is honest about what it is made of. Touching up a chipped edge years later is straightforward. If you would rather have it plain, the same bust is carved in unpainted white marble or in black stone.

Sizing it for a hall or an office

At 24 inches from the base of the plinth to the top of the head, this is a life-size head on a chest-up body — the size an institution usually asks for. Set on a waist-high pedestal it brings the face to roughly eye level for someone standing in front of it, which is why the same scale turns up in college foyers, trust offices, community-hall entrances and memorial rooms. It weighs about 68 kg, so whatever carries it has to be solid; a hollow console will not do. Allow around 18 inches of clear width and a plain wall behind, since patterned wallpaper or a crowded noticeboard competes with the face. The plinth face can carry an engraved name and dates, which is the usual request for a foundation-day or anniversary installation.
