About This Piece

A portrait carved from your photographs

A memorial bust begins with you rather than with a catalogue. You send photographs — a wedding portrait, a passport photo, a phone picture from a family lunch — and the sculptor works from them, building the likeness in clay first so the brow, the set of the jaw and the line of the smile can be corrected before a chisel touches stone. The piece shown here is an elderly lady with her saree pallu drawn over her head and across one shoulder, hair parted down the middle, a small bindi, and the gentle closed-lip smile most families ask for.

Makrana white marble, hand-painted in red and gold

The block is Makrana white marble from Nagaur district in Rajasthan — the same quarry belt that supplied the Taj Mahal, and a stone whose fine, dense grain holds the detail a face demands. Here the face, hair and blouse are left in the natural stone under a satin polish, while the pallu is hand-painted a deep red with a gold border, so the colour reads as drapery rather than as paint laid over a person. Full polychrome, including a painted skin tone, is equally possible if that is closer to the photograph your family remembers.

Where an 18-inch bust sits

At 18 inches the head is close to life-size, and the portrait reads properly from about two metres away — the right distance for a console table in a living room, a shelf in a study, or a remembrance corner beside a framed photograph and a lamp. Allow roughly 11 inches of width for the shoulders and a surface that can carry about 29 kg of solid marble. A bust of this kind sits better slightly above waist height than on the floor.

Making it yours

We design the piece with you — the size, the stone, how much of the saree is painted, whether a name and dates are engraved into the plinth — then brief the sculptor and follow the work through to delivery at your door. A portrait commission of this kind runs eight to twelve weeks, depending on how much likeness work the photographs need. Send us the pictures you have on WhatsApp and we will tell you what the sculptor can work from.
