The earth-touching gesture

Bhumisparsha marks the moment just before enlightenment. Seated beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, in present-day Bihar, the Buddha is challenged for his right to that seat and answers without speaking — he reaches down and touches the ground, calling the earth itself as his witness. This murti follows that account closely. The right arm drops over the right knee with the fingertips resting on the base, the left hand lies flat in the lap with the palm turned upward, and the eyes stay lowered rather than meeting the viewer. The face carries the marks that identify the form: the ushnisha rising through tight snail-shell curls, the elongated earlobes left by the heavy earrings of his years as a prince, and a plain monastic robe drawn over the left shoulder that leaves the right shoulder bare. It is the posture most often carved in eastern Indian Buddhist sculpture, and the one most people picture when they picture a seated Buddha.

Cast marble dust, not quarried stone

This piece is cast rather than carved, and it is worth being plain about what that means. Marble dust composite is finely crushed marble bound in resin, poured into a mould and then finished by hand — the sanding, the edge work and the detail across the face, fingers and drapery are all done by the artisan families we work with once the casting has cured. The result behaves differently from quarried stone in ways you can see at close range: the grain is very fine and unusually even, there is no veining anywhere on the surface, and the colour settles into a natural white with the faintest cream warmth, rather than the cool brightness of Vietnam marble or the fuller cream of Makrana. The matte, honed surface carries no glassy reflection, so the robe folds and the lotus petals stay legible under ordinary room light.

Sizing it for a shelf or a desk

At 12 inches tall, roughly 6 inches across and 5 deep, this is a shelf-scale murti rather than a floor piece. It sits comfortably on the middle tier of a home mandir, on a study desk beside a lamp, or on a narrow altar ledge with a diya and a folded cloth alongside — the arrangement the piece was designed around. Weight is close to 7 kg, so a wooden shelf or a stone ledge carries it without reinforcement, though a glass shelf should be checked against its rating first. Two placement conventions are worth following: keep the murti raised on its own base or a low chowki rather than resting it directly on the floor, and where the room allows, seat the Buddha facing east toward the sunrise. Leave a hand's width of clear space on either side so the lotus base is not crowded by lamps and offerings.
