About This Piece

This handcrafted Subramanya Swamy captures the Thiruchendur seashore form of Lord Murugan — the serene, victorious aspect worshipped at the Tamil coastal shrine of Thiruchendur. Carved single-faced and two-armed, he stands with the Vel raised upright in his right hand and his left hand resting easily in katyavalambita at the hip, a youthful and composed bearing rather than the martial six-faced Shanmukha form. The kirita crown, the sacred thread across the chest, the layered flower garlands, and the finely pleated dhoti are all worked by hand. The piece is carved in Sagyin white marble, the celebrated statuary stone of the Sagyin Hills near Mandalay. It reads as a soft temple-white with a cool, milky depth — its faint cloudy movement is prized in the carving tradition rather than hidden away. A soft satin polish lets light settle into the folds of the dhoti and the beads of the garland without the glassy glare of a full mirror finish, keeping every chisel line legible. TMW commissions each Subramanya through its network of independent master sculptors in Jaipur, who hand-carve the leaf-bladed Vel, the garlands, and the crown detailing before the final finishing. Because the piece is made to order, the proportions, the lotus base, and the surface finish can be adjusted to suit your shrine and the light it will sit in. At 30 inches it is sized for a substantial home shrine, a dedicated pooja room, or as a considered gift to a Murugan-devoted family — especially resonant for Tamil households and NRI families who carry the Thiruchendur tradition abroad. Standing on its lotus pedestal, it presides quietly and steadily over the space.
