Why Dholpur sandstone for a courtyard

Dholpur pink sandstone comes out of the quarries of eastern Rajasthan, the same belt that supplied the warm-toned stone of Mughal fort and haveli work across north India. In its pink shade it reads as a pale blush that shifts through the day — cooler at first light, warmer by mid-afternoon — with a fine, even sandy grain and the occasional iron-oxide freckle that marks it as quarried stone rather than cast composite. It is what north Indian builders reach for when a piece has to live outdoors, which is why this Radha Krishna pair is cut for a courtyard rather than a shelf.

How the Radha Krishna jodi is carved

The jodi is carved to order for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur. TMW designs the piece with you, briefs the sculptor, and follows the work through to your door — rough block to primary massing, then the drapery and ornament, then a honed matte surface that keeps the stone's grain readable instead of sealing it under shine. The faces, the hands and the flute are finished entirely by hand; no machine tooling goes near them.

The jugal jodi pose and its deep-cut ornament

Krishna stands in tribhanga, the three-bend posture, flute at his lips and a peacock-feather crest rising from his crown. Radha stands at his left with a lotus, her veil drawn over her hair — the jugal jodi arrangement of the Braj temples around Vrindavan and Mathura, where the two are honoured as one presence rather than as separate deities. The ornament is deliberately deep-cut rather than filigree-fine: in an open courtyard shallow detail softens within a few monsoons, while deep relief holds its shadow lines for decades.

Placing a four-foot pair outdoors

At 48 inches on its plinth the pair meets a standing viewer at eye level, so it wants a clear approach of six to eight feet to be read properly — a courtyard, a sheltered outdoor shrine, a temple forecourt, a farmhouse entrance. Sandstone is porous by nature, so a covered or part-covered position keeps the surface even; a fully exposed piece will weather gently over the years, which some owners want and others would rather avoid. East or north-east facing is the usual choice for a Krishna murti.

Other stones, a taller plinth, a lotus base

Size, stone and base are all open. The same jodi can be carved in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble, black stone or cast marble dust; the plinth can go taller for a raised shrine, or a lotus base can replace the square one.
