About This Piece

The form: Balaji as he stands at Tirumala

This murti follows the form of Lord Venkateswara as devotees know him from Tirumala. He stands upright on a round pedestal under an arch carried on two pillars. A tall kireeta crown rises from his head, and the gold namam covers his eyes as it does in the temple. His upper hands hold the chakra and the shankha, his lower right hand is turned down in the gesture of giving, and his lower left rests at his hip. A long pink garland falls from the crown to his feet, and his chest is covered in layered ornaments. The arch is crowned by a lion-face motif, with a bird figure at each corner, and the pillars stand on stepped bases.

The painting: ivory, gold and pink

The colour is applied by hand. The whole piece has a warm ivory tone, with the carved detail of the arch and pillars shaded in soft cream so it reads clearly. Gold is used where it matters most: the crown band, the namam, the chakra and shankha, the round ornaments at his shoulders and the small flowers on the pillar bases. The garlands are pink, and the face is painted with a gentle smile.

The size: 8 inches

The piece is 8 inches tall and about 6 inches wide, on a base about 2 inches high, so the arch frames the Lord like a small shrine of its own. It suits a home mandir or a shelf in the pooja room, and it is a thoughtful gift for a griha pravesh, a wedding or anyone devoted to Balaji.

The material: cast marble dust

Marble dust composite is crushed marble bound in resin, cast in a mould and then finished and painted by hand. It holds the fine detail of the arch and the ornaments well and is lighter than solid stone of the same size. Dust it with a soft dry cloth or brush, do not soak it, and keep it out of strong direct sun so the colour lasts.
