The stone, the brass and the wood

Makrana marble comes out of the quarries at Makrana in Nagaur district, Rajasthan — the same belt that supplied the Taj Mahal, and the stone Jaipur workshops have cut for generations. It holds a fine crystalline grain that takes deep undercutting without chipping, which is exactly what a jhula this size asks for: slender pillars, pierced brackets, a roof cornice stepped in three courses. The marble is finished to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror, so the carving reads as shadow and edge instead of glare. Two other materials join it. The seat hangs on solid brass chains, which are sourced and fitted by hand at the workshop rather than cast there. The whole pavilion then stands on a separate dark hardwood plinth with a moulded edge, lifting the marble clear of the mandir shelf and taking the wear.

Six pillars and a double-tier roof

The form here is architectural rather than decorative. Six turned and carved pillars, each rising from its own stepped square base, carry an entablature and a double-tiered roof crowned with kalash finials. Deep floral brackets spring from every pillar head, so the roofline appears to float on carved leaf-work instead of sitting flat on stone. A band of coloured stone inlay runs the length of the frieze — small pieces of red and green stone set into cut recesses in the marble, in the parchin kari method Agra and Jaipur workshops have used since the Mughal period. Beneath it, the swing seat carries a cusped backrest with a lotus rosette at its centre and a carved apron along the front lip.

The seat is left empty on purpose

Most marble jhulas in the market carve the infant Krishna into the swing, which fixes the piece to one murti forever. This one is sold as furniture. The seat is a bare platform, wide enough and deep enough to take a Laddu Gopal murti of roughly no. 9 to no. 12, so a family can set the murti they already do seva for into the swing rather than acquiring a second one. The backrest gives a dressed murti something to lean against, and the open front and sides leave room for poshak, a pagdi and a bansuri without crowding. Because nothing is carved in, the same jhula also takes a Bal Gopal or a small Radha Krishna pair of similar height.

Sizing it for a home mandir

At 24 inches tall this is the largest jhula in the line, and it reads as a piece of mandir architecture rather than an accessory. Allow about 18 inches of shelf width and 11 inches of depth for the plinth, plus roughly 8 inches of clear headroom above the finials so the roofline is not visually pinched. Weight is around 32 kilograms with the plinth, so a stone or hardwood mandir shelf carries it comfortably while a wall-hung floating shelf will not. It suits a dedicated pooja room more than a cabinet niche. Through Janmashtami and Jhulan Yatra the swing takes flower garlands well — hang them from the pillar heads rather than the chains, which need to stay free to move.

Making it yours

Every part of this can shift. The pavilion can be cut at a different height for a smaller or larger murti, the inlay band swapped for plain carved moulding or a fuller pietra dura panel, and the polish taken up to a mirror or back to a matte honed surface.
